Instructions
Today we will practice making our own slides and viewing them. You will make a wet mount slide and a dry mount slide. Slides are delicate, and can cut, so it is important that you follow instructions. Place the microscope on a stable surface where someone won't trip on the cord while walking. Remove the cover. Plug it in and the light should come on.
Wet Mount Slide:
1. Using a pipet, place a small drop of pond water in the middle of a slide.
2. Place a slip cover over the drop.
3. Place it on the stage.
4. Try to orient the object you will view into the light, and secure it with the arms.
5. draw what you see
6. dispose of your slide in the sharps container
Dry Mount Slide
1. gently roll a cotton swab on the inside of your cheek.
2. roll the cotton swab on the middle of the slide.
3. place a slip cover over the spot.
4. Place the slide on the stage.
5. draw what you view on the slide.
6. dispose of the slide in the sharps container.
Use the 4x magnification first. Focus with very small movements. Use your dominant or best eye to view through the microscope and close the other eye. Once you have your item focused, try to draw what you see. Describe it in at least one sentence. When you have completed your drawing, put your slide in the sharps container, unplug your microscope, lower the stage and leave the 4x magnification down. Cover the microscope with its dust cover.
