What is resistance exercise?
Resistance exercise is any form of training in which the body is required to work against a form of resistance. The most common form of resistance training is weight training. In weight training an individual can use "free" weights; ie., dumbbells, plates, etc. Other forms of resistance training include elastic bands, exercise in water, body weight exercises, and weight machines.
Resistance training is necessary to change the body's composition. By working the body against resistance consistently over time you create a greater percentage overall of lean muscle tissue in the body which then has a greater capacity to burn fat tissue. Therefore, resistance training is essential to healthy weight loss. It is also the main form of developing a more athletic body capable of producing greater, strength, power, and explosiveness. Bodybuilders engage in resistance training as the method by which they develop a more aesthetic physique.
