Course Description (Curriculum)/Materials Needed

Course Description:

Seventh Grade Integrated Science focuses on a theme of structure to help students understand the world around them. Throughout the year, we will complete eight units.

  1. Introduction to science including scientific method and using the metric system
  2. Structure of matter as atoms and molecules
  3. Forces of matter and Newton’s Laws
  4. Density of matter and how it affects the structure of Earth
  5. Structure and function of cells, organs and organ systems
  6. Structure of genes and how traits are passed from parent to offspring
  7. Changes in species over time with natural selection
  8. How structure is used to develop classification systems

Seventh grade science will also provide a foundation for students to learn about the nature of science through hands-on inquiry, laboratory experiments and projects.  Cadets will use the steps of the scientific method in all their inquiry throughout the year.

Materials:

  • Pencil and pen for writing notes – WILL NEED A WRITING UTENSIL EVERY DAY
  • Binder or folder for organizing notes and worksheets - can be kept in the classroom if desired
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Current chapter notes and homework assignments given during class

Attendance/Tardy Policy/Make-Up Work:

  • Cadets will be given two days for every day they are absent to complete any make-up homework or missing assignments.
  • Cadets are responsible for any work that was missed while absent.
  • Cadets will be marked “T” for tardy if they are not at rest outside the classroom when the bell rings.
  • If the cadet is more than ten minutes late to class, they will be marked as absent for that class period.
  • Cadets are only allowed nine absences (excused or unexcused) each semester.

DISHONESTY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. ANY CADET BEING DISHONEST, OR ASSISTING A CADET TO BE DISHONEST, ON ANY ASSIGNMENT, QUIZ, TEST, LAB, OR CLASS WORK WILL RECEIVE POSSIBLE SCHOOL DISCIPLINARY ACTION AND A ZERO FOR THAT ASSIGNMENT.

Homework/Extra Credit

  • Late work will be given a two day grace period for full credit. After two days, the assignment will lose 10% every week it is late.
  • I do not regularly offer extra credit assignments but there are in class opportunities for extra points throughout the school year.
  • Cadets will be rewarded for going above and beyond on their assignments.
  • Assignments and labs can be corrected for partial credit, but they MUST BE completed before the unit test.
  • Missing Assignments will be given a grade of zero points.

Power Standards

Every class will have power standards (basic concepts) that need to be learned and passed with a grade of 70% or higher in order to pass the class.  They are responsible for all their classwork which will be their final grade in the class.  But, in order to get a final grade for the class, each cadet will need to learn and pass off on all the power standards for that term.  They will be given multiple opportunities, but until these power standards are passed, they will receive an "I" for incomplete for the class.  If this incomplete remains at the end of the term, they will receive an "F" and fail that term.  Click on each power standard to open up a study guide which will aide in studying for the assessment.

Cell Phone/Electronic Equipment:

Cell phones and other electronic equipment (I-pods, CD players, mp3 players, etc.) are distracting to me, as a teacher, and they detract from the learning environment necessary in a classroom.  As there have been many problems with the use of cell phones in the past, the following rules will be enforced:

  • Cell phones and other electronics are NOT to be in my classroom; electronic equipment of any kind is to be left in bags or lockers, out of sight.
  • I will have a secure place in the classroom for cadets to willingly store their silenced phones at the start of class.
  • If visible, in use or not, phones will be confiscated.
  • After the third confiscation, the phone or other electronic will be turned into the office.

** Parents, if there is an emergency during the school day,

PLEASE call the office, not your student’s cell phone.**
