Metric System Practice

It is important in science to understand and be able to use the metric system.

First, watch the metric system power point then complete the worksheets on practicing the metric system.

Metric System:

-          is a system of measurement based on the number 10.

-          is used by all scientists and most countries as a common language of measurement.

-          The metric system is also known as SI (International System of Units).

In the metric system, we can make smaller or larger units by adding a PREFIX to the basic metric unit.   This prefix stands for a different multiplication factor.  Write in the factor (the number we multiply the basic metric unit by to make a smaller or larger unit).

Prefixes to make larger units                                         Prefixes to make smaller units

Kilo (K) = 1,000                       meter  /gram                   Deci (d) = 1/10 or  0.1

Hecto (H) = 100             _____     Liter_____                  Centi (c) =1/100 or 0.01

Deka (Da) =  10                basic metric unit (1)               Milli (m) =  1/1000 or 0.001

In order to help you remember these prefixes, create a MNEMONIC DEVICE:

An example:    King Hector dances during class moments.
