What is Astronomy?
Astronomy, simply put, is the study of space. There is a huge range of topics that we could cover in this class (the Universe is literally full of Astronomy topics...ha!). Unfortunately, we only have one semester to dig into things. So, this semester will be an introduction to astronomy, and will hopefully spark your interest to dig further into the science.
Let me be clear though: this is an Astronomy class, NOT an Astrology class!
Astronomy vs Astrology
Astronomy is the study of space and objects in the Universe using SCIENCE--meaning we form hypotheses, collect data, test our hypotheses by analyzing that data, and drawing conclusions. Astrology, on the other hand, is a pseudoscience based on the idea that your personality, future, indeed your entire life is predetermined by the date and location of your birth. You probably know this as the Zodiac, or "what's your sign?". While we will be learning about the constellations (because they are fun, and they pertain to the history of astronomy as well as mapping the night sky), and I will even admit it is fun to read about my Zodiac sign and horoscope...that is not science. We will not be learning astrology in an astronomy class.
