FRICTION DETAILS STUDY GUIDE

Friction- the resistance of an object to movement, also causes changes in kinetic energy.

Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred

  • One of the most common energy transformations is Kinetic Energy to Potential Energy
    • Kinetic Energy is energy of motion--which can change an object's position
    • Potential Energy is stored energy, usually due to a change in position/shape
      • Potential Energy gives an object the potential to move (turn back to kinetic energy)

Friction: resistance to movement- Often part of kinetic energy is transformed into heat energy by  Friction

  • Causes kinetic energy to transform to heat energy
    • Like rubbing your hands together: the friction between your hands as they move turns to heat energy and your hands warm up

Think about a child on a slide:

  • The child has potential energy (gravitational) at the top of the slide
  • As she slides down, that potential energy transforms to kinetic energy
  • Friction with the slide (resisting her sliding) transforms some of the kinetic energy to heat energy
    • Loss of kinetic energy causes the child to slow down

The amount of friction can be changed by:

1. Altering the surface:

    • Smoother surfaces have less friction
    • Rougher surfaces have more friction

2. Adding a lubricant:

    • Water, grease, etc on the surface make it more slippery, so less friction

3. Changing the mass/weight of the object:

    • More weight means more force holding the object to the surface it's on, which means more friction
    • Less weight means less force pushing down, so less frictionRUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE- is a contraption that uses a chain reaction to carry out a simple task. It performs a very basic job in a complicated way
